Assessing Landsat Fractional Ground-Cover Time Series across Australia’s Arid Rangelands: Separating Grazing Impacts from Climate Variability

چکیده
Suitable measures of grazing impacts on ground cover, that enable separation of the 1 effects of climatic variations, are needed to inform land managers and policy makers across the arid 2 rangelands of the Northern Territory of Australia. This work developed and tested a time-series, 3 change-point detection method for application to time series of vegetation fractional cover derived 4 from Landsat data to identify irregular and episodic ground-cover growth cycles. These cycles were 5 classified to distinguish grazing impacts from that of climate variability. A measure of grazing 6 impact was developed using a multivariate technique to quantify the rate and degree of ground 7 cover change. The method was successful in detecting both long term (> 3 years) and short term 8 (< 3 years) growth cycles. Growth cycle detection was assessed against rainfall surplus measures 9 indicating a relationship with high rainfall periods. Ground cover change associated with grazing 10 impacts was also assessed against field measurements of ground cover indicating a relationship 11 between both field and remotely sensed ground cover. Cause and effects between grazing practices 12 and ground cover resilience can now be explored in isolation to climatic drivers. This is important 13 to the long term balance between ground cover utilisation and overall landscape function and 14 resilience. 15 16

Ecological Assessment of Spatio-temporal Changes of Vegetation in Response to Piosphere Effects in Semi-arid Rangelands of Uzbekistan
Since livestock production in Uzbekistan in arid and semi-arid zones is based on rangeland vegetation, contemporary studies have focused on improvement of low productive grazing lands and rehabilitation of degraded rangelands. Less interest has been given to the driving factors of land degradation and their interaction with other ecosystem components, e.g. response of vegetation to grazing indu...
متن کاملPlant Species and Functional Types’ Diversity in Relation to Grazing in Arid and Semi-arid Rangelands, Khabr National Park, Iran
In arid and semi-arid rangelands, grazing as one of the natural or human induced processes has direct and indirect effects on structure and dynamics of plant community and ecosystems. A study was done to analyze the effects of grazing on plant species diversity and Plant Functional Types‘ (PFTs) diversity of arid and semi-arid rangelands. We analyzed plant richness and diversity data from 75 sa...

متن کاملFractional Cover and Structural Variations along a Land Use Degradation Gradient in Savannas in and around the Kruger National Park, South Africa
Land degradation is one of the most significant environmental problems in the semi-arid and arid savannas of Southern Africa. Degradation affects vegetation structure, cover and patchiness and this result in the loss of vegetation resources used by rural populations (grazing, fuel wood, and other non-timber forest products) and wildlife. Land degradation processes are influenced by rainfall, la...
